Career In Construction: Making a career in
construction may not be on women's radar, but it should probably be on their
radar. The construction industry offers some unique opportunities for women.
The first is that the industry is facing a severe shortage of manpower, and the
second is that very few women are involved in the industry. According to
statistics, less than 9.1 percent of women in the United States are currently
part of the construction workforce, and most of them are limited to design or
management tasks, resulting in only 1.2 percent of women. Survey Report : According to a
survey, in 2019, 80% of US construction firms had difficulty recruiting trained
staff to the available positions. As of June 2019, there were 263,000 jobs
available in the US construction industry, for which these firms were looking
for trained manpower. This shows that one can shape one's future by making a
career in this field. Unlike other sectors, the gap between the wages of men
and women in the construction sector is relatively small. Earning Opportunities : In the construction
sector, women earn 95.7 cents per dollar for men, while the average income of
women as a whole is 80 cents. This means that by joining the construction
sector, women can significantly increase their income. The question then arises
as to why women do not enter the construction industry in spite of such
attractive opportunities.
The biggest reason is that women do not know how many
opportunities there are for them in the construction sector, while the other
reason women stay away from this sector is that it is dominated by men. This
has been acknowledged by women themselves in many surveys. According to
experts, women and girls want to be associated with the engineering and
construction industries, but it is a very frustrating situation that they do
not turn to the field just because they think this path will be very difficult
for them.
Furthermore, another important point is that when women enter the
field, they do not see many women in leadership roles, which further
discourages them. The main reason for this trend is that when people think of
the construction sector, the idea of heavy physical labor arises in their
minds. In fact, there are many jobs in this sector that do not require physical
labor. The Role of Technology And Manpower :We are seeing that modern technology
is greatly affecting the way we work. Although robots do not yet appear to work
on any construction site, new methods and new technologies can increase the
productivity of the human workforce, after which more or less physical strength
or ability hinders their work. Now technology is bringing flexibility in the
construction sector and when flexibility is created in a sector, it benefits
everyone. This means that the general superintendent or project manager can now
go home on time and have a better and better time with their child. It also
means that if one day they or their child falls ill, they can take care of the
site or office responsibilities from home if needed. Historically, since the
construction process involves a lot of hands, everyone involved has to get to
the site as soon as the work starts at 9 a.m. and then no one can leave the
site under construction before 5 p.m. The construction sector needs much
manpower for the same reasons. Now that technology is making it easier for
people to work and space, it has become a little easier for women to enter the
field. Is the construction industry suitable for women? No, I will, but
fortunately this trend is changing. The female workforce needs to be
strengthened by the fact that voices are being raised for change in the world
and there are many companies that are becoming sympathetic to this voice of
change. The role of technology is growing in the construction sector as well as
in the sectors. Modern technology is creating equal opportunities for all and
this is in the interest of women interested in making a career in the
construction sector.
